Unit 731 Human Experimentation — War Crime Buried in Darkness
Japanese military biological weapons development and human experiments in Manchuria
Unit 731 (Kwantung Army Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department) operated from 1937-1945 at Pingfang, Harbin, Manchuria. Commander: military surgeon Shiro Ishii.
What Was Done
Systematic human experimentation on POWs and civilians. Subjects were internally called "maruta" (logs).
Bacterial infection experiments: Injecting plague, cholera, anthrax to observe progression
Frostbite experiments: Inducing and studying frostbite in extreme conditions
Live vivisection (without anesthesia): Dissecting living subjects to observe organ changes after infection
Pressure experiments: Human body reactions in vacuum environments
Biological warfare tests: Spraying plague bacteria on Chinese cities to verify effectiveness
Estimated 3,000 to over 10,000 victims. Mostly Chinese, but including Koreans, Russians, Mongolians, and Allied POWs.
Post-War — Immunity Controversy
Unit 731 members were never prosecuted for war crimes. The US granted immunity to Ishii and key members in exchange for biological weapons research data during the early Cold War.
This deal was confirmed through declassified documents in the 1990s.
Perspectives
China: Core memory of the war. A museum operates at the Harbin site.
Japan: Government doesn't deny Unit 731's existence but states it "has not confirmed" human experimentation. A 2002 Tokyo court acknowledged Unit 731's biological warfare and experiments as fact but rejected compensation claims. NHK aired a 2017 documentary revealing Khabarovsk trial audio recordings.
Korea: Korean victims were included but awareness is lower compared to comfort women and forced labor.
