Korea-Japan Cultural Origin Disputes: Kimchi, Cherry Blossoms, Kendo

Why they spread online, and seeing them as cultural exchange

Various disputes arise between Korea and Japan over the origins of traditional culture. Notable examples include kimchi vs. kimuchi (Japanese-style kimchi), the debate over cherry blossom origins, and the origins of kendo (Korean name: Haedong Kumdo) and karate/hapkido.

With the development of SNS and the internet, these disputes have spread further, and sometimes factually incorrect claims combined with nationalist sentiments provoke public emotions in both countries.

Academically, many believe it is desirable to approach these from the perspective of cultural exchange and mutual influence.
